The standard NFL strength of schedule number is the combined winning percentage of all 17 of a team’s opponents in the previous season. A team whose opponents went a combined 150-119 last year has an SOS of 0.558, which would put them somewhere in the upper third of the league. A team whose opponents went 120-149 has an SOS of 0.446, which would rank near the bottom. The calculation is simple, but the interpretation is not.
The first wrinkle is that previous-year performance is an imperfect predictor of current-year strength. A team that went 12-5 last year may go 7-10 this year if their quarterback retires or their roster turns over. The raw SOS number anchors to last year, which means it captures the schedule’s nominal difficulty rather than its actual difficulty. For division markets, SOS matters because most of a team’s record is built against non-division opponents. A division favourite with a soft non-division schedule is structurally more likely to clinch the title outright; a favourite with a brutal non-division schedule is more vulnerable to a stumble.
